#CookForSyria Pop-up Café: the proof is in the pudding

Written By: Sandy Aziz, NEXTGen London Member

If you have been following our #CookForSyria initiative, you will be excited to hear that there is a #CookForSyria pop-up café in Seven Dials, Covent Garden this holiday season.

Not only is the café serving a delicious variety of mezze, coffees and cakes, but it all includes a side of generous volunteers ready to greet and receive guests and visitors. Hospitality at its finest!

Mezze

Imad Alarnab, a Syrian restaurant entrepreneur and refugee we have previously worked a lot with is serving some of Syria’s favourite dishes, which include hummus, baba ganoush accompanied by mezze such as fattoush, tabbouleh, ‘ful mudammas’ (fava beans, olive oil, garlic and cumin), labneh and flatbread.

Cakes and Coffee

Come have your cake and eat it too at the café where you will find a variety of pastries, cakes and mince pies created by London’s top bakers including Lily Vanilli, Bread Ahead, The Good Egg, Henrietta Inman and more including all the friends of #BakeForSyria. You can also enjoy freshly brewed coffee courtesy of La Marzocco UK and Ozone Coffee and tea donated from Pukka Herbs and Tregothnan!

#CookForSyria Cookbook

Clerkenwell Boy and Serena Guen originally came up with the idea to curate one charity dinner, with one chef, in aid of NEXTGen. This quickly became a large-scale banquet with six headline chefs which sold out within in days. Leveraging the power of social media, top chefs, cookbook authors and families with links to Syria were encouraged to share their favourite recipes online with a #CookForSyria inspired twist—so that anyone could host their own charity supper club or bake sale, or just learn about the amazing cuisine and culture of Syria. As recipes flooded in, it made sense to share these beyond social media and in the form of a beautiful not-for-profit recipe book. The book is available for purchase at the café and online for £25 and all profits from the sale of the book go to NEXTGen which means it all goes to UNICEF’s Children of Syria Appeal.

Our beautiful #CookforSyria Cafe is open in Covent Garden at 36 Monmouth Street (Seven Dials) and doors are open 10am-7pm Monday to Thursday (with Mezze’s only until 6:00pm), 10am-8pm Friday and Saturday and 12-6pm on Sundays until 24 December. Proceeds benefit Unicef’s Children of Syria Appeal.

You won’t know just how great the café is until you visit, after all, the proof is in the pudding!
